DiamondBack Generation IV Nymph – a specialist rod for modern Euro nymphing
DiamondBack Generation IV Nymph is a technically focused series designed by Joe Goodspeed for modern Euro nymphing. The individual models are not simply the same blank in different lengths and line weights – each variant has its own action profile tuned to fly weight, tippet diameter, fish size and presentation style.
At Thymallus we offer two lightweight configurations with a Carbon Grip: the ultra-finesse 10'0" / #1 and the more versatile 10'7" / #2. Both are four-piece rods built for precise long-leader control, sensitive nymph presentation and protection of fine tippet.
Key features
- specialist rod for Euro and tactical nymphing
- nano-reinforced carbon blank with fast recovery
- sensitive tip with a stronger lower blank section
- Carbon Grip for direct contact with the blank
- micro stripping guide positioned close to the grip
- lightweight titanium single-foot guides
- three anti-tangle snake guides near the tip
- down-locking reel seat for improved balance
- matte, low-glare blank finish
- 4-piece construction with rod tube and cloth sock
Two distinct tools for finesse nymphing
10'0" / #1 is the most delicate of our two variants. The manufacturer positions it as a finesse tool for small nymphs, very light leaders and wary fish. It is optimized for approximately size 14–26 hooks and 6X or finer tippet. The blank loads with very little weight and is designed to protect fine diameters during the fight.
10'7" / #2 adds reach and greater versatility. The manufacturer recommends approximately size 12–24 hooks and 5X–8X tippet. It remains a light, sensitive nymphing rod, but offers more reserve for multi-fly rigs and larger fish. Independent testing of the 10'7" #2 classified its action as moderate-fast, with a smooth progressive bend and no pronounced hard spot, which helps protect fine tippet.
Carbon Grip – more contact, less insulation
The Carbon Grip is a functional component rather than simply a visual alternative to cork. Its firm composite surface transmits vibration directly to the hand and improves feedback from the rig. User reports repeatedly mention secure grip when wet and very direct transmission of subtle contact.
There is also a practical trade-off: in cold weather the carbon grip feels noticeably colder than cork. Anglers who fish mainly in winter should take that into account.
Guide layout designed for mono and micro-leader setups
The first stripping guide is positioned very close to the grip to reduce leader sag and improve contact with the rig. Lightweight single-foot guides follow, with three snake guides in the upper section to help reduce fine monofilament wrapping around the tip.
On a Euro nymphing rod, guide position and guide weight strongly affect how the upper blank behaves. Generation IV therefore treats the blank, grip, reel position and guide train as one integrated system.

Which variant should you choose?
- 10'0" / #1 – for maximum finesse, small nymphs, very fine tippet and small to medium-sized fish.
- 10'7" / #2 – for more reach, wider rivers and more versatile light nymphing with additional reserve when fighting fish.
Not sure which variant to choose?
We will gladly help you choose according to river size, nymph weight, tippet diameter and the size of fish you most often target.
