AHREX
Big flies - big fish
Fly hooks for large streamers, predators and demanding fishing in fresh and salt water.

With a large streamer, the hook is the last place where you want to compromise. It has to carry a bulky fly, penetrate reliably and stay strong when a powerful fish strikes.
AHREX – hooks designed around a specific way of fishing
Ahrex entered the market in 2016 with a simple idea: to design fly hooks not merely as another size or shape in a catalogue, but as a solution for a specific fly type, technique and target species.
The brand grew out of the Scandinavian fly-fishing environment, where sea trout, large pike, salmonids and modern streamer tying all meet. Over time, Ahrex developed dedicated series for freshwater, predator and demanding saltwater fly fishing.
What defines AHREX
- hooks designed for specific techniques and fly types
- models for large streamers and powerful predatory fish
- different shank lengths, wire diameters and geometries according to use
- chemically sharpened points with an emphasis on reliable hook-ups
- dedicated series for predator and saltwater fly fishing
- collaboration with well-known fly tiers and personalities in modern fly fishing
Predator Series – when the target is not a small fish
The Ahrex Predator series was developed for targeting large predatory fish with a fly rod. Pike, musky and bass place very different demands on a hook than a delicate trout fly. A large streamer needs enough room for materials, suitable bend geometry and, above all, strength that makes sense when a hard strike is followed by a powerful fight.
A typical example is the PR320 Predator Stinger. Its heavy-wire construction and stinger geometry are designed for large predator streamers, while the longer shank provides room for bulky baitfish, bucktail and synthetic patterns.
Salt Series – for big fish in salt water
The Ahrex Salt Series is built for demanding marine conditions and species that put a hook under significantly greater loads. High strength, a chemically sharpened point and the A-Steel finish characteristic of this series form the foundation.
The individual models can differ considerably. Shorter, exceptionally strong hooks make sense for large saltwater fish, while longer streamer models give the fly tier more room for large baitfish imitations and modern profile flies.
Predator
Large freshwater streamers for pike, musky, bass and other predators. The emphasis is on strength, suitable geometry and enough room for bulky flies.
Salt
Hooks for tropical and colder-water saltwater fly fishing. Models range from versatile streamer shapes to constructions intended for exceptionally powerful marine fish.
Bob Popovics and the Beast Fleye
Among the most interesting examples of Ahrex development are the SA290 Beast Fleye and SA292 Beast Fleye Long, created in collaboration with legendary American fly tier Bob Popovics, the creator of large Beast-style flies.
With patterns like these, the hook is no longer simply a carrier for tying materials. It must provide room for a large fly profile, accommodate a strong leader and still retain the geometry needed for a reliable hook-up. This is also why these models use an oversized eye, while the SA292 has a longer shank than the SA290.
How to choose the right Ahrex hook
With large streamer hooks, the size number alone is not enough. Two hooks marked 6/0, for example, can have different shank lengths, gap widths, wire diameters and overall geometry. The choice therefore starts with the fly itself and the fish you are tying it for.
When choosing, consider
- the target species and expected load during the fight
- the size and profile of the streamer
- shank length and the space required for tying materials
- wire diameter and the required hook strength
- eye size and the type of leader or shock tippet
- whether the hook will be used in fresh or salt water
A big fly needs a hook that matches it
In predator fly fishing, size alone does not decide the outcome. What matters is the combination of geometry, strength and room for a particular streamer.
Why you find AHREX at Thymallus
At Thymallus, we do not see Ahrex as a brand where we need to stock every model that exists. We are especially interested in it where it offers a solution for large streamers and fish for which an ordinary fly hook is simply not enough.
That is why we focus primarily on selected Predator and Salt models for pike, predator and large streamer flies. With these hooks, the differences between individual shapes genuinely matter, and the right choice depends on what you want to tie and which fish you intend to target.
Tell us how large the streamer is and what species you want to target. We will be happy to recommend a suitable hook model, size and construction.
